The hospital is located at the western part of Yuli town, Hualien County.
On October 1, 1957 it was conjugated from both the Army's sixth sanatorium and the Yilan sanatorium as " Yuli Veterans Hospital in Taiwan " which was in charged by the then Taiwan Provincial Department of Health. The hospital was later renamed as "Yuli Veterans Hospital" YLVH" on July 1, 1958 and as "YLVH,VAC, Executive Yuan" on April 1,1963.
On May 1965, YLVH took commission from The Bureau of Health of Taiwan Province to establish " Provincial Yuli Sanatorium" within the hospital. Later, "The Yuli Branch of The Provincial Hualien Hospital" was moved into the hospital, too. Therefore, these three institutions had incorporated to operate the local grouping medical center.
On August 1,1972 the hospital structures were expanded and established two branches -Zhongxiao and Zhongyi, and three units - Haeduan Farm, Chyrshang and Jyhshyue work teams. Nevertheless,the Chyrshang work team was dismissed, and both the Haeduan and Jyhshyue Farms were served as occupational therapy areas on January 4, 1990.
On Jan 1, 2003, YLVH was reformed with 2 departments,16 divisions,8 sections,Zhongxiao and Zhongyi branches,Haeduan and Jyhshyue occupational therapy Farms. It also has 3720 beds and about 85 hectares in land.
In the early year, YLVH was just a sanatorium for looking after veterans and their families who were suffering from chronic psychotic disorders.
In order to provide enough medical services , it had made much enhancement and improvement both in the community services and the quality of medical care since 1985. In 1985, it became a central hospital in East Taiwan that specialized in the prevention and therapy of psychiatric disorders.
The Department of Health, Executive Yuan approved YLVH as a qualified psychiatric specialty hospital in 1989 and a local hospital since 1990.
It was approved as a Pediatric Teaching Hospital in 1992 and a Psychiatric Specialty Teaching Hospital and Psychiatric Specialist Training Hospital in 1997 . Since then, The Department of health, Executive Yuan, reassessed YLVH as a Psychiatric Specialty Teaching Hospital, Psychiatric Specialist Training Hospital and a local general hospital in 1999 , 2000 and 2004. In 2001, it established a nursing home and community care center in order to extend the community medical services. From then, YLVH has become a comprehensive hospital that provides multiple clinical services and fulfilling various needs for veterans and local community population.
